Chalkboard: Creating Fandemonium

The world doesn’t need another platform to place bets, monitor sports scores, or talk trash about teams and players; it needs a single platform that integrates the three. Chalkboard is here to maximize the entertainment that lies in wagering on sports with friends. This new app brings a social aspect to sports gambling and keeps the conversation going long after the final buzzer.

CHALLENGE

Land a sports betting hole-in-one

The current user experience doesn’t allow sports bettors to connect and have fun in one place. The Chalkboard team asked us to help create a tool that delivers everything this audience needs without having to toggle between several different sites/apps. And, of course, there was a request to put a strong focus on the healthy competition that inherently exists in sports via the messaging platform.

We were tasked with helping them create a brand identity and interface that evokes the visual language of sports and the conversation that goes with it. We wanted it to feel accessible and relevant for all who enjoy connecting with friends and family through a shared love of the game.

APPROACH

Create “fandemonium”

We wanted to develop an engaging environment that is as dynamic and exciting as the sports these folks are following, whether they are experts or novices.

To do that, we created intuitive messaging hooks that are fun and lighthearted. Sports statistics are quite dense by nature, so we helped Chalkboard find a typographic system that affords more visual range that makes sections easily discoverable.

In addition, we incorporated the use of color that cues the user to various interactions. Similarly, the visual design feels fresh with its nuanced iconography that is unique to Chalkboard.

RESULTS

Let’s play ball

Chalkboard held the social gambling experience together with a national intern program, attracting 100+ members at over 70 schools. The app officially launched January 2021, just in time to track your NFL and NBA bets, follow live scores, and chat up your friends in one convenient place.
